Derived from the Javanese language, "Ayu” means beauty.
Some ideas of beauty are taught, others are inherited. Through constructed imagery, “Ayu” reflects on the traditions and expectations that continue to shape the experiences of Indonesian women.
It does not seek to replace one ideal with another, but to suggest that beauty can exist in many ways, including the freedom to define it for oneself.
