ORANG LAUT

DESIGN FUTURE, RESEARCH
2023

As we face a future where rising sea levels may compel humanity to adapt to living underwater, this project draws inspiration from the Orang Laut’s deep-sea knowledge and unique physical adaptations. A survival kit has been developed, featuring innovative wearables and tools designed to support underwater living. These include temperature-regulating suits, specialized equipment for breathing and navigation, and tools for self-defense and resource gathering. By integrating the Orang Laut’s historical identity and expertise, this project aims to ensure their legacy endures and provides valuable insights into future survival strategies for underwater living, anticipating the challenges and opportunities of life in 2050.

A collaborative project of 5, created as part of Design Future assignment in Year 2 BA(Hons) Design Practice at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
